Are you “Smarter Than Cars?” Talk Mon. 23 May

Shannon Bufton speaks to Rotaract Beijing on Monday May 23rd about Smarter Than Cars, the organization he co-founded in 2010 as a platform to promote cycling in Beijing.

Shannon says, “We believe that the bicycle is one of the best tools for sustainable personal mobility in dense cities. Beijing’s history is deeply associated with the bicycle but sadly in modern times automobiles have increasingly squeezed the bicycle off the street and out of the consciousness of the public. This is in stark contrast to the trend in many of the most progressive and sustainable cities in the world – which are moving away from automobile reliance and towards more sustainable forms of transportation such as bicycles, public transport and even walking for urban mobility.”

“STC is helping to ignite a “bicycling 2.0 culture” here in Beijing through our social events, website, lectures and of course our regular rides. We are also undertaking research on Beijing’s unique bicycle past with the aim of providing insight and analysis on one of the best bicycle cities the world has ever seen.”

Shannon will discuss the work of the organization to date and some of his recent research on Beijing’s old bicycle culture and plans for future projects.
