The movie ‘Amazing Grace’ is an uplifting story of William Wilberforce’s fight against slavery. It recounts his life’s story and the many decades of courageous lobbying, with the movie ending with the triumphant vote to outlaw slavery. The American Civil War similarly ended with the outlawing of slave labour. And so the history books end with the upbeat note that mankind has progressed towards civility. But have we deceived ourselves?When people hear the term ‘human trafficking’, they often equate it with international prostitution rings in Asia. But what exactly is human trafficking and why has it been able to continue? Elaine Pratley will be speaking to those questions and will help facilitate a discussion on what we can do to make a difference.
